Twitter does allow you to retain the rights to your data as far as copyrighting goes, however they do reserve the right to take any content submitted and make it available to other companies, organizations, or individuals that partner with Twitter. This can be for syndication, broadcast, etc.
Twitter’s Terms of Service agreement essentially can take
any of your information such as your IP Address, device type, operating system,
browser type, search terms, cookie information, etc. in order to provide you
with more targeted ads and statistics on the usage of their website. They do, however, state that your payment
information provided while using their services to make purchases will not be
provided to anyone else and your personal information will not be made public,
however, Twitter does reserve the right to use the information of the purchase
you made to better target ads that may interest you.
Twitter takes no responsibility for data loss or use of your
information through a breach. The most
they will ever give back to those effected would be $100.00 or the amount paid
to twitter in the past six months if anything is paid at all.
This is all pretty standard when it comes to social
networking sites and their terms and conditions. Most company’s write in their contracts that
they really aren’t held responsible for anything. As we’ve seen lately, however, no companies
really hold themselves responsible when it comes to data breaches. The only thing they really try to do is to
ensure that it doesn’t happen because they know that if it does, they’ll lose
your patronage. Twitter is no different
here. They will do what they can to
ensure data breaches don’t happen, because they don’t want you to stop using
their services. However, as stated, they
really don’t hold only liability if it does happen.
The one thing you can take solace from, however, is that
most of your credit cards, bank cards, etc. have protections built in for you
protecting against fraud if in case it does occur. While that won’t help erase the personal
information they have stolen, it at least ensures that your money should be
protected.
